Woollahra is famous for its premium property prices, but one residential street in the area is attracting attention for a very different reason: its extreme slope.
Attunga Street is believed to be one of Sydney’s steepest residential streets, with a gradient of around 25 degrees. The incline is so steep that pedestrian railings have been installed along both sides of the road.
For locals, the slope can create some unusual challenges. Cars have reportedly struggled on the hill, while residents have even been known to chase runaway wheelie bins down the street. On weekends, Attunga Street can also attract runners and cyclists looking for a serious workout.
A Steep Street With a Big Property Price Difference
Attunga Street stretches for around 250 metres, and its steep incline may be influencing property prices.
The most recent unit sale on the street was a renovated two-bedroom apartment that sold for $1.45 million, below Woollahra’s unit median of $1.586 million.
House prices, however, vary significantly depending on the property and its position on the street. A four-bedroom home with a pool near the bottom of Attunga Street recently sold for $7 million, well above Woollahra’s house median of $4.45 million.
According to agent Ben Collier, the location can offer buyers better value compared with nearby streets.
Getting to the Top Can Be a Challenge
The steepness can also make selling properties more difficult.
Agent Riki Tawhara sold a newly built house at the top of Attunga Street for $16.1 million in 2025. Despite its high-quality construction and interior design, getting in and out of the property proved challenging for some prospective buyers.
The narrow street and steep driveway required confident driving, particularly when making the turn into the property.
For one potential buyer, the challenge was enough to change his mind. After visiting the property at night, he struggled to make the turn into the driveway and ultimately did not return.
How Does Attunga Compare With Other Steep Streets?
Attunga Street isn’t the only Sydney road famous for its incline.
Awaba Street in Mosman is known for the annual Balmoral Burn running event, while Rainbow Street in South Coogee is another steep street offering dramatic views towards the ocean.
The title of Sydney’s “steepest street” is difficult to officially confirm because gradients can vary along a road. However, Attunga Street has earned a strong reputation among Sydney’s running and cycling communities as an extremely challenging climb.
What’s Next for Woollahra Property?
Woollahra’s property market has experienced mixed results. The suburb’s median house price has reportedly fallen 8.5% over the past year, while still recording an 18.4% increase over five years.
Future property values could also be influenced by a proposed new Woollahra train station and potential rezoning that could allow more apartment development.
For buyers looking at Woollahra, Attunga Street offers an interesting combination: premium homes, challenging access and, perhaps, one of Sydney’s best free workouts.
