For many Sydneysiders, living by the beach is a dream. But for some, like long-time local Garry Greco, that dream turned into a lifelong love affair with Collaroy — a seaside suburb that blends relaxed coastal living with strong community spirit.
From a Weekend Visit to a Lifetime Home
Growing up in Windsor, Garry rarely made it to the beach — maybe once or twice a year. But one spontaneous lunch trip to Collaroy changed everything.
“It just hit us while we were eating a chicken schnitzel that we could live here,” he recalls. “People actually live here — this isn’t just a holiday spot.”
Within two weeks, Garry and his mate packed up and moved into a small apartment by the water. Years later, he’s now raising his own family on the Collaroy Plateau and helping others find their slice of the coast as an agent with Clarke & Humel.
A Community That Stays
Collaroy isn’t just a suburb people move to — it’s a place they stay. Many locals move within the area, shifting between the plateau, valley, and basin, drawn by the same magnetic lifestyle and friendly neighbourhood feel.
The introduction of the B-Line bus service, offering regular and convenient travel to the city, has made the suburb even more appealing for those who want the best of both worlds — a peaceful coastal home with easy urban access.
Art, Surf, and Coastal Charm
Local artist Jennifer Rosnell has called Collaroy home for more than 15 years, and she’s here to stay.
“I’m a big fan,” she says. “It’s gorgeous here — the art deco cinema, the pine trees along the beach, the ocean pool, and the charming cafes and shops. The bus just makes it easy to get around.”
Jennifer’s husband, Andrew, is a firefighter and part-time surf coach at nearby Long Reef, a popular spot for both surfers and walkers. You’ll often find Jennifer there too, sketching or capturing moments that inspire her next coastal oil painting.
This weekend, Jennifer opens her Anzac Avenue studio as part of the Pittwater Artists Trail, giving visitors a chance to experience her art — and perhaps take home a little piece of Collaroy’s seaside magic.
Local Favourites from Garry Greco

“Every home on that street is stunning, and the beach is right at the end. It’s quiet, exclusive, and arguably one of the most beautiful streets in the country.”
Coffee Fix: Drip Coffee Traders
“It’s the heartbeat of Collaroy Plateau. You go in for a coffee and end up staying for hours, chatting with locals. It’s where the community connects.”
Suburb Highlight: Long Reef Headland Walk
“With panoramic ocean views, whales breaching offshore, and paragliders overhead — it’s easily one of the best walks in Sydney.”
The Allure of Coastal Living
From breathtaking views to a welcoming community and laid-back rhythm, Collaroy’s charm is timeless. It’s not just about the beach — it’s about a lifestyle that keeps people connected, inspired, and loyal to the coast.
