Manly Memories: Where the Beach, Community, and Real Estate Meet

For many long-time locals, Manly isn’t just a postcode — it’s a way of life. For Belle Property Northern Beaches agent Anthony Calacoci, it’s home in every sense of the word. “Unless someone’s giving away a penthouse in Rome, I’m not leaving,” he jokes.

Anthony’s family story is deeply rooted in Manly’s local history. “Dad came here in 1950 when he was 19 and opened the first espresso-gelato bar right opposite the beach,” he recalls. That shop, Calacoci’s Café, became a local landmark — a gathering place for beachgoers and families for more than three decades. Today, a plaque on South Steyne commemorates its legacy, symbolising the strong community spirit that still defines Manly.

Growing up as one of eight kids, Anthony remembers The Corso before its modern transformation. “We’d run wild as kids, and when we were old enough, we all worked at the café after school and on weekends,” he says. “Even now, people in real estate recognise me from those days behind the counter.”

The Manly Lifestyle: Beachside Energy Meets Village Charm

For Anthony, the magic of Manly living lies in its perfect balance — stunning beaches, vibrant restaurants, and a tight-knit local community. It’s a blend of seaside relaxation and sophisticated lifestyle that continues to attract buyers and renters to the Northern Beaches real estate market.

That same local pride runs deep for Andrew Hill, owner of the popular Manly Fish Market. Since 1994, he’s been serving some of Sydney’s best fish and chips, drawing both locals and tourists alike. Born and raised in Manly, Andrew recalls a carefree childhood spent on the beach or riding bikes through the streets — a lifestyle that perfectly captures the Northern Beaches’ laid-back charm.

He also remembers when The Steyne Hotel had a tougher edge, long before its $8 million transformation. Now, with the Northern Beaches Council planning a Special Entertainment Precinct (SEP) trial to revitalise the area’s nightlife, Andrew sees hope for Manly’s future.

“Manly has so much energy during the day, but the evenings have gone quiet,” he says. “Supporting local businesses is vital if we want to keep the community alive and thriving.”

The 18-month SEP trial, expected to begin next year, aims to re-energise Manly after dark, create safer entertainment zones, and boost local trade — a positive step for residents, visitors, and Manly property investors alike.

Anthony’s Manly Favourites

  • Favourite Street: Bower Street — “It’s Manly’s version of Wolseley Road in Point Piper, just without the $100 million homes. Incredible views and close to the beach — it’s a dream address.”

  • Coffee Fix: Affogato Café, on Wentworth Street and Darley Road — “My nephews own it, and they learned their coffee skills from my late father. Many of Dad’s old café regulars still come by.”

  • Best Eats: Hugos for its unbeatable Manly Wharf location and top-notch service, Cibaria for authentic Italian by Chef Alessandra Pavani, and Norma’s Deli for fresh flavours that never disappoint.

Why People Stay in Manly

Manly continues to attract those who crave the Northern Beaches lifestyle — sun, surf, and community. For locals like Anthony and Andrew, this seaside suburb isn’t just where they live; it’s part of who they are.

Whether you’re exploring Manly real estate, investing in a Northern Beaches property, or simply looking to experience the best of Sydney coastal living, this suburb remains one of Australia’s most enduring treasures — a place where nostalgia, community, and opportunity all come together.
